2013
Ohio bicyclists have a splendid array of organized events to enjoy
every year. The Ohio Bicycle Federation is pleased to help get the word
out and encourage cyclists of every interest and every skill level to
get out and ride! Here are some hints on how to get the most out of
this Calendar and make your 2013 riding season great: Get current
details —don’t just show up at last year’s place and time— organizers’
plans can and do change, or there may be an error in our listing! Look
ahead: some events have entry deadlines weeks in advance of ride dates.
Increasingly event listings offer Web site addresses where additional
information can be found along with downloadable entry forms or online
registration for immediate gratification. If requesting information by
mail, be sure and send a self-addressed, stamped business-sized (#10)
envelope to the address given. If you don’t send a SASE with your
request, don’t expect a reply! This, the Web version of the Calendar,
is updated and corrected as the season progresses! Follow us on Twitter
@OhioBicycling.
Finally, consider subscribing to and participating in our free Ohio
rides email discussion list — details
available here!

Supporting Rides — A special category of events listed
in this Calendar are those that have pledged to donate at least $1 per
rider toward the publication of the OBF’s Ohio Bicycle Events Calendar.
Look for the special symbol (seen here) and color designating these
events. Support the rides that help support this Calendar!
Tours are noncompetitive group
rides for cyclists of various ages and abilities. Tour
organizers (usually bicycle clubs) normally charge a modest fee to
cover services provided. Budget tours and free rides usually offer few,
if any, services. Full-service tours, however, typically offer a map,
food stops, and road (“SAG”) assistance. Mulit-day events provide
additional services. Fund-raisers may have higher entry fees to provide
income for their causes. “Bike-a-thons” or “pledge rides” may or may
not be operated in affiliation with a bicycle organization and
fund-raise primarily through pledges of donations per mile each rider
completes; they may have a minimum pledge amount in addition to an
entry fee.
COM: Responding to market
demands, we are phasing in a new category of touring event: COMmercial.
Commercial rides are tours operated on a for-profit basis. Many bike
races are already staged in this way. Commercial rides may resemble
bike club hosted tours or range all the way to luxury inn-to-inn, luxury-supported "cruises."
